In 1891, Dr. A. J. Chandler bought eighty acres of desert land from the federal government. He built a ranch and split it up into several small ranches for sale. In 1912, the town was founded and incorporated in 1920. Chandler has had notable residents such as rapper/actor Ice-T and former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. The town offers festivals such as the Ostrich Festival, which celebrates the Ostrich farms in the 1910s which catered to the demand for plumes used in women's hats of the era.
