Supervisor's Accept Initial Bargaining Proposals For Secondary Roads and the Sheriff's Department

Representatives for Secondary Roads employees, the Sheriff's Department employees and the Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors were on hand for initial bargaining that will begin on July 1, when all parties agree, on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Jill Davis, Attorney from the Law Firm of Montgomery, Barry, Bovee, Steffen and Davis, LLP of Spencer, representative for the employees of the Palo Alto Sheriff's Department, presented the initial bargaining proposal. "I have a proposal in writing for you guys," Davis began.

Potential $10M bond issue considered in FD

A planned general obligation bond issue would pay for removing both dams on the Des Moines River in Fort Dodge, along with a handful of other projects. City Manager David Fierke said he is preparing a potential bond issue that may total $10 million.

New library worker proposed, but most budgets remain flat

The Fort Dodge Public Library would get another part-time employee under a proposed budget for 2018-2019 reviewed by the City Council Monday. Schmidt said that in addition to tax dollars, the library gets money from the Ann Smeltzer Charitable Trust, the Catherine Vincent Deardorf Foundation, the library's own foundation and the Friends of the Library.

New FD shelter would serve women, kids

The board, made up of nine community members, did not reveal the exact location for the shelter, but said it will be located in the southeast part of Fort Dodge's business district. Vaala said the only restriction is women who are registered sex offenders, but that the organization would attempt to help those people in other ways.

Walker held on bond

Brody Walker, 19, of Fort Dodge, had his bond set at $25,000 cash during his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Friday morning. During that incident, Walker allegedly shot a man named Kenneth Johnson in the chest and left arm, according to the criminal complaint, filed with the Webster County attorney's office.

Firefighters and plant personnel work on a way to extinguish a smoldering fertilizer fire Friday afternoon at the NEW Cooperative plant in Roelyn. The fire, which was in an elevator structure several stories above the ground, was apparently started by sparks from maintenance work.

Herzog sells Crossroads Mall

Crossroads Mall in Fort Dodge has been purchased by a trio of New York real estate investment firms in a deal announced Friday. Namdar Realty Group, Mason Asset Management and CH Capital, all of Great Neck, New York, bought the mall from J. Herzog & Sons, of Denver, Colorado.

Undergraduates Design and Build 'Sandbox' to Show How Gravity Works

Undergraduate students in the Department of Physics and Astronomy designed and built a sandbox where users can mold their own universe with sand and watch how gravity affects an object - a spacecraft or a comet, for example - as it travels through the imagined environment. Funded by a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation , the augmented-reality sandbox, dubbed "Gravbox," is the first interactive system of its kind to be used for astrophysics.

CJ to add another amino acid to production

An expanded CJ Bio America plant in Webster County will begin producing 20,000 metric tons of another amino acid beginning next year, company leaders announced Wednesday.
