Detours, major projects planned for this summer

Drivers will need to use detours to get around downtown roadwork this summer in Greenwood, but city officials say the temporary inconvenience will be worthwhile once four major road projects are complete. The work includes rebuilding two roads, building a new connector street and adding a roundabout at a busy intersection meant to help with daily backups.

Police: Local man fired shots at signs

A Greenwood man was arrested after police said he fired more than 20 shots at signs in front of at least one home and a busy highway. Keith J. Knura, 25, was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness, carrying a handgun without a license and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The eighth annual camp will be conducted the weeks of June 11, 18 and 25. Camp times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Whiteland Community High School. Cost is $150 per week.

Charles F. James

Charles was born on July 8, 1930 to Frank and Gayle Cecil James. In 1951, Charles married his wife, La Mona Dell Martin James, who preceded him in death in 1966.

Area schools redistricting planned

With one elementary school at maximum capacity, about 50 students will be moving to another Clark-Pleasant school, and children in new neighborhoods may be sent to a school that isn't the closest to their home. Grassy Creek Elementary is currently at capacity with 925 students, and school officials are making some shifts to help ensure the school doesn't get too crowded.

Neighborhood rezoning turned down

A second development was turned down for a piece of property on the southeast side of Greenwood that city officials have been looking at for a new park. The proposed Westport Homes neighborhood would have included 147 townhomes, but developers also offered to donate 16 acres of land for a city park.
