Hickory began its life as a tavern built by Henry Robinson under a hickory tree. The town was known as Hickory Tavern until its name changed to just Hickory in 1873. Hickory White is a furniture manufacturer in the city and is one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the United States having opened its doors in 1902. Hickory is home to eight different recreation centers, over fifteen different outdoor parks and the Stanford Skate Park. A federal grand jury has indicted a former Hickory, North Carolina, police officer accused of beating a female suspect and falsifying reports to cover it up, the Justice Department said Monday. Robert George, 45, of Hickory was indicted on charges of use of excessive force and obstruction of justice, prosecutors said.
