North Platte is located in southwestern Nebraska, at the confluence of the North and South Platte Rivers that form the Platte River. The town began as a railroad town and today, the railroad's influence can still be found. A western Nebraska natural resources district is raising funds for a solar-powered, geothermal-heated greenhouse to grow oranges, lemons and other tropical fruit. The North Platte Natural Resources District's greenhouse project would include an outdoor learning facility to promote the district's research and education goals, the Scottsbluff Star Herald reported.

North Platte NRD plans to construct greenhouse

The NRD is raising funds for a solar-powered, geothermal-heated greenhouse, sunk 4 feet into the ground over a network of ducts circulating 54-degree air warmed by the earth, the Scottsbluff Star Herald reported. The greenhouse would measure 126 by 17 feet and stand 14 feet high, said NRD Assistant Manager Barb Cross, who is overseeing the project.
