About: butte, montana
Butte spent much of its life as a mining town under the Anaconda Company. Up until 1920 it was known as one of America's most successful copper boomtowns. It was a large immigrant town and very diverse. The town had a famous red light district of saloons nicknamed "The Line". Butte is where Charlie Chaplin worked before he headed for Hollywood. Today the area is known for tourism and, along with neighboring Anaconda, Butte makes up the largest National Historic landmark District in the United States.
