Cedar Falls is located in northeastern Iowa. The city was founded in 1845 by William Sturgis and was originally called Sturgis Falls in honor of the first family to settle in the area. However, when the family moved a few years later, the city was renamed Cedar Falls after the nearby Cedar River. Because of its proximity to the river and therefore its availability of water power, Cedar Falls quickly developed into a milling and industrial center.
