Multiple departments battle Wiggins prairie fire

Things certainly heated up Wednesday night for the neighbors in Weld County after several lightning strikes resulted in a prairie fire along Highway 34. On Wednesday evening after 8:30 p.m., lightning struck the ground in multiple locations between Kersey and Wiggins, sparking a fire that spread over thousands of acres by Weld County Road 69 and U.S. Highway 34. Over a dozen regional departments from Greeley to Fort Morgan with approximately 80 personnel were called to the scene, closing off westbound traffic on Highway 144. Roads were reopened as soon as the fire was contained in time for the morning commute.
