Lakewood is located in central Colorado, just outside of Denver and is part of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was built by Charles Welch and W. A. H. Loveland, who together constructed thirteen blocks in eastern Jefferson County in 1889. Loveland, who was once president of the Colorado Central Railroad, retired to his newly built community. The city has four sister cities: Chester, UK; Portsmouth, UK; Stade, Germany; and Sutherland Shire, Australia.
