A Lorain Municipal Court judge said Friday that at least half of the 21 large dogs rescued from a hot, unventilated apartment last month can be placed into foster care. Cornelius Charlton and Lauren Souris of Kevlar Kennels pleaded not guilty before Lorain Municipal Court Judge Thomas Elwell to the fifth degree felonies, each punishable by a maximum of six months to a year in jail and a fine. Elwell also ruled that the 20 cane corsos and one Brazilian mastiff dogs remain in the care of the Friendship Animal Protective League in Elyria until the case could be resolved.

21 dogs removed from 'deplorable' conditions in Lorain

Lorain police on Tuesday were forced to remove 21 dogs who were found living in what was described by officials as a "Dog Concentration Camp" on the city's east side. Around 9:30 a.m., a woman called the department's dispatch line and reported a "bad" smell coming from the home on the 1700 block of E 28th St. She said she saw "at least five" dogs inside, but no one answered the door when she knocked.
