Mesa was first inhabited by a Native American tribe named the Hohokam which means "the departed ones." This tribe built elaborate canals that have been called the most sophisticated in the prehistoric New World. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested one of its deputies for taking money while responding to a report of a dead body. In a news release sent Tuesday night, the sheriff's office said 39-year-old Gregory Johnson responded to a report of a dead body near Mesa on October 28. While investigating the death, detectives learned Johnson may have taken money from the deceased.
